Eggs Benedict, The Fontenay

The Fontenay

Only if you must

A sauce with plenty to offer that completely buries the egg and ham. Day 2 will decide.

The Eggs Benedict

Not appealing to look at. The sauce has a lot to offer in terms of flavour. The egg and ham, however, are completely lost. Day 2 will decide.

Translated from my German notes.

The first of two breakfasts at The Fontenay on the Outer Alster, on two consecutive days. A rare case where the same plate can be compared directly.

On the plate

A large, pale blanket of sauce covers the egg and ham, with a colourful leaf salad on the side. Visually, it’s not appealing.

In terms of flavour, the sauce has a lot to offer; it is the strongest part of the plate. And that is exactly the problem: the egg and ham are completely lost. A Benedict lives on the interplay of its parts, and that doesn’t happen here.

And the next day?

Day 2 was meant to decide. How it turned out is in the entry from 4 September, linked below under “Other visits here”.
